Speaker Straus Unwilling to Forget Voter ID and Focus On Real Problems

by: Michael Hurta

Fri Nov 20, 2009 at 09:54 AM CST

Yesterday, Teas House Speaker Joe Straus released Interim Charges to his committees.  You can look at them here (.pdf).  In a letter to members, Speaker Straus stated, "these charges and the recommendations you develop will form the basis for major legislation we will consider next session."

The following is the third charge given to the House Committee on Elections:

Examine the prevalence of fraud in Texas elections. Study new laws in other states regarding voter identification and recommend statutory changes necessary to ensure that only eligible voters can vote in Texas elections.

Wasn't it already concluded that voter impersonation happens infrequently?  Changes, clearly, aren't necessary no matter which way you slice it.

I am upset mainly, though, because Speaker Straus saw how a push for voter suppression derailed plenty of good laws last session.  It was his one colossal failure as a first-term speaker, and he wants another go.

Wow.  What happened to learning from one's mistakes?  The only way I can see this as something other than a repeat of an error is if he feels his position is in danger from the Craddick-Right.  Even still, Voter Suppression should be a non-starter with any leader, especially one that fell flat in its wake once already.

Why do we need "vote id?" (0.00 / 0)
I don't know anyone who isn't asked for identification in addition to their voter id card in this state so why are the Republicans so adamant about this?

They lost me a long time ago with regard to illegal immigration. They started all these "immigration reform" groups, most of which seem tied to that idiot Roy Beck and NumbersUSA which is just a cover for his, and their, xenophobia, and suddenly all the Republicans in Congress came up with this term "guest workers" to use when talking about illegal immigrants. We have a law. It was never enforced. It was never enforced because of the Republicans.  They like their cheap labor. They just don't want to provide the same rights to "guest workers" that everyone else has under the law. What it comes down to.

As for registering dead people and Mickey Mouse, registering them doesn't mean they will be able to vote.

The real problem is the number of real people who are alive who are registered to vote who don't vote.  Which is why we have so many pieces of deadwood in both parties in public office. They win by default. Not by the voice of the people.

HC apparently had 5 cases in 2008.. (0.00 / 0)
Went to an Election Law Class for this past Election cycle, only to be told by one of the Prosecuters at HC (was there to talk about election law fraud)...Wow, 5 whole cases.  The one he spoke about was a Foreign Student that came in to vote...thought he could because he had a VISA and demanded to vote so the Election Judge allowed him to Provisional Vote.  They are going after this guy...BIG TIME!  What a waste of Tax Payers money.  Who the hell cares.  Seriouly.  We know the vote didn't count and that he was just an unknowing schmuck excited to vote.  But yeah, he absolutely needs to be deported for this ugly act of....VOTER FRAUD. (Yes I am being snarky!)

What if... (0.00 / 0)
What if the Speaker is actually trying to document the lack of an issue here? I mean, he is one of the people saying we need to change the tone and one of the best ways to do that is establish facts rather than feed emotion.

I was struck by the lack of red meat for the GOP in the interim studies. My sense is that Straus, like Laney before him, really is not interested in advancing issues that divide, and he knows that this is a no-win issue for members. It killed a lot of other legislation last time, and another round of him not shepherding the House on this issue could be damaging to him.
