TX-Sen: John Sharp Garners First College Democrats Endorsement

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Nov 17, 2009 at 08:00 PM CST

The first group of college Democrats in Texas to endorse a candidate in the upcoming United States Senate special election announced today that they are backing John Sharp. The club is the Stephen F. Austin Young Democrats in Nacogdoches.

"John Sharp's campaign is all about us," said Laura Barry, president of the Stephen F. Austin Young Democrats in Nacogdoches.

"John has our pledge to work just as hard as he is to give Texas a fresh voice in Washington," added Ms. Barry, who also serves as the political director of the Texas College Democrats, which has 34 chapters across the state. "He has the vision to lead us into the future - and we will be there with him every step of the way."

It is reasonable to note the timing of the endorsement as the University Democrats in Austin are set to vote on endorsing in the U.S. Senate primary as it stands this Thursday, a day after their major BLUEPrint for Texas fundraiser. The UT-Austin University Democrats were the 2008 College Democrats of American "Chapter of the Year" and are the largest College Democrats chapter in the nation with the activism to match.

+ DISTRIBUTING 42,000+ voter registration cards in key neighborhoods!

+ REGISTERING 11,565 students to vote TOTAL (Including 5,700+ in one day)!

+ KNOCKING on 40,000+ doors statewide for key candidates!

+ CALLING 12,233 voters on behalf of Texas Democrats!

+ MOBILIZING 18,000 students to early vote (a UT-Austin record)!

We'll be reporting Thursday night whether John Sharp will pick up a second College Democrats chapter's endorsement, or if Bill White will overpower Sharp's endorsement and earn the support of the arguably the biggest youth endorsement possible in Texas.

Update: It appears from a comment by one of the University Democrats that the club has cancelled the U.S. Senate endorsement meeting. No work yet on the reason, though it's reasonable to assume the recent pronouncements by Sen. Hutchison on her new belayed resignation timeline have cancelled the urgency to hold an endorsement meeting before the students are gone on break until late January. I expect it will be moved to the regular joint pre-primary endorsement meeting with the Central Austin Democrats held annually after the filing period.

What upcoming special election for US Senate? (2.00 / 1)
It seems to me that there is no "upcoming special election".  There could be one in say April but unless KBH actually wins in March and subsequently quits the Senate, there is no special election.

Too bad that neither John Sharp nor Bill White had the wisdom to switch to running for governor.  The race for governor is getting crowded. We don't need any more candidates in that race although I think Shapleigh might be a good addition.

SFAYDs (0.00 / 0)
Interesting that this article was focused on UT Dems (and Bill White) rather than the SFA Young Democrats.

While the University of Texas has over four times the enrollment of Stephen F. Austin State Univ., not to mention is located in the bluest of blue counties, the SFA Young Democrats are working to establish themselves as a force in all of East Texas. The SFA Young Democrats were only re-established in 2007 and have made their presence know.

+ COLLECTED 250+ signitures in support of health care reform

+ DISTRIBUTED hundreds of literature pieces health care

+ CALLED hudreds of voters throughout Virginia for the Deeds campaign

+ Called hundreds of voters to help elect Senator Mark Udall of Colorado (2008)

+ SENT four members to Florida to campaign for President Obama (2008)

+ LOBBIED city council for a polling place on campus for 2008 election

The fact that the chapter of college democrats at SFA is smaller does not change the fact that they are active and influencial in the region. John Sharp received the first endorsement because Sharp has always had the best interest of the next generation of Texans in mind. He has shown this in the creation of the Texas Tomorrow Fund, saving Texas public schools from possible bankruptcy in 2006, and his work on the Texas Performance Review.

As usual, BOR seems to have picked their candidate and has no problem making it known.

This article did not focus on Bill White. Sharp's name or a pronoun referencing to him is used I think 8 times in this post. Bill White- only once, and only in contrast.

Many kudos to the SFAYDs. It's fair to note though, since you noted they are "working to establish themselves as a force in all of East Texas" that 3 of the 6 points you outline, are all for campaigns way outside of Texas, with two more as action items of national note (health care); versus all of the UDems points being in-state, and those not including the two I cut off which were issue oriented, but Texas issues.

I'm not picking a candidate here, but sure, I'm picking a club. We do bleed orange around here, it's nothing personal. :)

John Sharp! (1.00 / 1)
The voice of today's generation...if by today you mean 1975, and by voice, you mean a guy who's been out of office since most of these students were born.

Was this endorsement self-financed?

Full disclosure - I think all the Dem candidates for Guv either suck or don't have the juice to challenge Perry effectively.

UDems Cancelled the Endorsement Meeting (0.00 / 0)
We're no longer doing an endorsement... at least not this semester.

yes, KT -- the recent pronouncement by Hutchison influenced it (0.00 / 0)
They made the cancellation decision on their regular Monday night officer/leadership-council meeting this week.

I am pretty sure that bringing it up was in response to the Hutchison pronouncement.

UT gets it right. (2.00 / 1)
UT (among other college groups) seem to have gotten the endorsement right: Wait until an election date is set to make an actual endorsement.
